It’s February: 5 Ways to Show Your Support During Black History Month

by | Feb 1, 2023 | Features, Diversity, Life

Black History Month offers a time for us to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of African Americans. Regardless of our heritage, there are plenty of reasons to commemorate Black people who made history. By celebrating Black history, we can share experiences, unite with others and honor diversity. Here are five ways to support Black history – all year round.

  1. Shop Black-owned businesses.

Did you know that Black-owned businesses are two times more likely than white-owned companies to go out of business? Lack of capital and structural racism are just a few reasons minority-owned businesses fail.

Whether online or in-person, there are plenty of opportunities to support Black-owned businesses. Check out these websites for information on African American businesses you can support.

  1. Teach your children about Black people who made historical contributions.

There are plenty of notable Black figures who have made significant contributions in politics, medicine, technology, arts, entertainment, sports, literature, science and more. Visit the following sites to learn about famous and not-so-famous Black history makers.

  1. Attend virtual Black History Month celebrations.

You can honor Black history from the comfort of your home. Online celebrations offer a way for your entire family to get involved. Here are a few events you can attend virtually.

  1. Host a book club event and read a book by a Black author.

Starting a book club for Black History Month is easy. The only thing you have to do is select a book and invite friends to read along with you. Select a date and time to meet online or in person. Be sure to create an agenda and topics to discuss.

  1. Share your gifts, talents and resources with people in your community.

Celebrating others is one of the most common ways to honor Black History Month. But you can also use your gifts, talents and resources to impact your community. Here’s what you can do to impact those around you.

  • Become a mentor or an ally in your organization.
  • Provide pro bono legal services to non-profit organizations.
  • Start a podcast or blog to bring awareness to topics that are important to you.
  • Volunteer your time to local charities.
